Two weeks ago, I met up with some friends and randomly chose Balmain as the meeting point.
“I feel like Italian” one said.
“Just google whatever” the other one said.
So I did, and bumped into RossoPomodoro online and made the booking for the night.
The secret is out, the best authentic pizza in Sydney is not in Leichardt (no big surprise) but tucked away along a little nook housing new apartments and not much else.
So why is it so good?
The dough is made using a long leavening process, and they have their white mozzarella flown in from Italy weekly, a 60:40 mix of buffalo and cow’s milk known as buffalina. Saying that their Margarita is fantastic, amazing considering it is the most basic pizza and is usually the most bland. Other favourite is blue cheese with italian ham, definitely more-ish in a rich sense.
As for dessert, their nutella and almond calzone is crazy, but I’m craving it as I type. It uses the same base as the pizza, with a pinch of sugar on top.
Decor wise rosso pomodoro (red tomatoes) is painted on the floor, and you can’t miss the black board with some house rules on it:
* No half & half
* No ham & pineapple (hear, hear!)
* Only Italian toppings and
and my favourite
* No corkage
They must be doing pretty well since they are only opened for dinner from 6 to 10 and it’s always full.
Wobbling out the door at 10:30, as Italian accents wave us out with a warm ciao, I don’t blame anyone for planning on returning as soon as possible.
